Lung Health News, Spring / Summer 2000
The American Lung Association of California has launched a statewide project to educate key opinion leaders about the need for tobacco control policies to further reduce tobacco use. The Educating Key Opinion Leaders project is funded by Proposition 99.
The American Lung Association of California has commissioned a statewide poll of 400 key opinion leaders throughout the state to determine current attitudes toward tobacco control policies in reducing tobacco use. Data collected in 1998 suggests that policymakers don't understand the connection between changing community attitudes about smoking and individual decisions not to smoke.
Poll results will be used to determine where efforts should be concentrated regionally. Local American Lung Associations have formed resources teams across the state and are working at the grassroots level to organize communities around important issues like how tobacco settlement monies should be spent locally and divestment of tobacco stocks, and reach out to key opinion leaders and policymakers.
